When I first heard about Professor Arnold Ehret and "Mucusless Diet Healing System", I could not believe the lifestyle he was speaking about could work let alone heal human's body. I found it so extremely different, but at the same so simple. All my life I was taught that cough syrup heals throat, pills get you back to your full health, and good hearty food, while sick, is best to gain the energy. Ehret way was completely different to what I knew until now. But because the conventional methods simply didn't work for me, I decided to give it a try.
Professor Arnold Ehret (1866-1922) was a German naturopath and alternative health educator, best known for "The Mucusless Diet Healing System". He wrote books and articles on dieting, detoxification, fruitarism, fasting, food combining, health longevity, naturopathy, physical culture and vitalism. He himself suffered from incurable sickness and was sentenced to early death by eminent physician. This is when he incidentally heard about naturopathy, which gave him hope. This is how his new path to natural lifestyle began. On his journey he healed thousands of sick people, which medicine had no cure for; people with paralysis, stuttering, caners, kidney failure, and more. Professor Ehret's philosophy was based on that pus and mucus - claiming that foods were the major cause of human disease. But it was also the foods that were the key to human health. In addition fasting, (simply eating less) is Nature's omnipotent method of cleansing the body from the effects of wrong and too much eating.
I was always a healthy and active person. I ate homemade foods, I ate very little sweets, and never overused alcohol.When I was 32 years old I was diagnosed with coeliac disease. My life changed and my health went downhill. I had health problems appearing one after another to name few: IBS, osteopenia, sciatica, gastritis, neurological problems, severe lack of energy, and endless allergies. What was the most devastating for me was that I couldn't exercise anymore. I was so ill that even walking was a huge effort. As a personal trainer that was tough to accept. Exercise always kept me sane, energetic, happy and bubbly. First I had to figure out how to cure myself.
Couple of years later after I gave a birth to my beautiful daughter, I started to volunteer for Gingerbread. A charity organisation for single parents in the UK. As single mum myself, and I was leading meetings for single parents in my local neighborhood. This is where I met my very good friend Karolina.
Thanks to Karolina, I bought my very first juicer, which was my first step towards health. Karolina taught me that celery juice is the key to a healthy start. And that meat is not. She taught me that simple food for children and adults is the best way. She was never really telling me what to do, but at the same time she was feeding me this new information about her much healthier eating habits. It was just what I needed. My journey to health has truly begun.
I started with drinking celery juice every day for the first 6 months eventually adding other veggies. I was pleased as in the form of juice my body has accepted veg and fruit something that until now wasn't possible. I started to feel energetic and that was great change. But that was not enough. Many more changes were needed.
Another five months have passed, when I stopped eating dairy. Dairy gave me the most unpleasant symptoms and pains. You'd think it would be easy to drop it, but it wasn't. I loved dairy and it was tough step to take. Then I removed meat from my diet, little by little, from eating it everyday, to finally not eating it at all. I had to learn how to cook spaghetti Bolognese without meat, and what to eat instead of a slice of ham and cheese on my sandwich. At first I was substituting meat and dairy ingredients with vegan products. However they were very expensive and I knew that as soon I am confident with my changes I would drop them too. Plus I wanted to minimize processed foods to almost none. The substitutes then had to go.
Lastly I stopped eating fish. In a way fish was easy as I was never big fish eater anyway. Alongside fish I was reducing my "free from" flours and breads. My cooking for once became simple, always at least partially raw with very little fats and salt. I learned to flavour my meals with fresh herbs and fat free dressings. It was like discovering a new continent. Unbelievable and grand. I was also working on cleansing by following my "no breakfast plan". I would eat only between 10am and 6pm. This helped my body to get rest from endless digestion. I was meditating every day and doing affirmations. I was also cleaning my colon with an enema or "cleansing properties" foods.
It might seem extreme, but very day I felt, that I am recovering. I have never felt so light and energetic. I always believed that as a single mum I was supposed to feel exhausted all the time; that this was normal. I was wrong. The more I transition into my diet, the easier my day went. I finally didn't need 12 hour sleep to function following day. Normal 8 hours at last left me rested and energetic. I feel relieve and joy for my achievements. I went through my first winter without sinus infection or a cold and flu. I started to walk longer. Finally I could explore more with my daughter. At home I have build a specially designed exercise routine, which I finally could enjoy and stick to.
I was not alone with this. My sister gave me enormous mental help. Her strength and believe in me helped me stick to this difficult process.
I'm still reading "Mucusless Diet Healing System" by Professor Ehret over and over. That book is my dietary bible. I love the fact that, I can understand what is happening, throughout my transition. I love that this was not another diet, which after few months you go back to where you were before. I am changing my lifestyle completely. I am learning about the human body in a way I never knew I could. Ehret way gave me strength and I feel that I can lean on his healing program. I don't feel all alone. I found an online community; people, who are going through the same path as me.
Today I am so much better. I learned that only making one step at a time will bring success, without loosing more vitality, or harm. I am still going through my transition and I will take as long as I need and I won't look back. I love how I feel now. I don't think my body ever felt so healthy, alive, light, even before I was diagnosed coeliac. The vital feeling of my entire body before or after meal is the best feeling I have experienced. I do not think I could ever go back to my old lifestyle. My knowledge and love for my life and health is too great.
And although I can not say that I have cured myself completely over the past year and a half, I can honestly say, that I am again a happy, pain free, light and full of energy woman. I am still on my path to a pure healthy body. The health changes I went through in such short time using "no breakfast plan" and "mucus free diet", are just remarkable.
